Black Oak Construction & Development was founded in 2021 out of necessity. English Avenue and Atlanta’s westside neighborhoods needed general contractors who would do quality work, on time and on budget, and be trusted by the community they were building in.
Founder Matt Maxwell saw this gap firsthand. As the leader of OaksATL, a nonprofit building affordable housing in English Avenue, he watched the neighborhood’s affordable housing developers struggle to find contractors who were both reliable and invested in the community. A civil engineer and licensed general contractor with more than 25 years in construction, Matt decided to build the solution himself.
Black Oak started as the go-to contractor for OaksATL and other affordable housing developers working in the surrounding westside Atlanta neighborhoods. Today, Black Oak has grown into a sought-after builder across affordable housing, spec homes, custom homes, and multi-family construction — expanding our reach across greater Atlanta and North Georgia while staying rooted in the values we started with: quality, equity, and dignity in every build.
